LII Certification
Start Your
Certification Journey
LII certification is not a course. It is an independent assessment of what you have already built as a leader — assessed against published standards, verified against workplace evidence, and issued as a credential that travels.
The first step for every applicant is a 45-minute Level Consultation. There is no fee and no obligation. It confirms your correct entry level before any formal process begins.
How the process works
-
01
Level Consultation — 45 minutes A structured discussion with an LII Assessor to confirm your entry level and assess evidence readiness.
-
02
Foundational Baseline Assessment Your evidence base is reviewed before formal submission. A quality gateway — not a grade.
-
03
Formal Submission Portfolio, Professional Practice Review, and Strategic Project submitted via the LII Candidate Portal.
-
04
Panel Assessment A structured professional dialogue with your Lead Assessor and Co-Assessor.
-
05
Grade Decision and Certification Outcome issued within 2 working days of Internal Verification sign-off. Certificate and Digital Passport issued on Pass or above.
LII does not run training programmes or preparation courses. If you are not yet ready for independent assessment, your Level Consultation will indicate this — and we can direct you to appropriate development before you apply formally. The LII Candidate Portal and all assessment activity is separate from any development provider you use.
Who applies for LII certification
LII certification is open to any professional who holds genuine leadership accountability and can produce independent evidence of workplace impact.
Individual Leaders
Professionals seeking independent verification
Leaders at any career stage who want their capability independently verified, their credentials made portable, and their leadership record established against a published international standard.
Employer-Sponsored
Professionals nominated by their organisation
Leaders whose employers have sponsored their certification as part of a talent or succession strategy. Employer nomination does not affect the independence of the assessment — LII assesses the individual, not the sponsor.
Equivalence Route
Holders of prior qualifications
Professionals who hold existing qualifications from recognised bodies and wish to establish LII equivalence. The equivalence pathway is assessed individually — contact LII to discuss whether your qualifications qualify for partial recognition.
Start with a Level Consultation
Before any formal application, every LII candidate completes a 45-minute Level Consultation with a qualified LII Assessor. This is a structured discussion — not a sales call — designed to establish one thing: your correct certification level.
LII's six levels are calibrated to scope of accountability, not seniority or job title. Applying at the wrong level is the most common cause of assessment failure. The consultation prevents this.
At the end of the consultation you receive a written level recommendation. There is no fee. There is no obligation to proceed. If you are not yet ready for formal assessment, the assessor will tell you — and explain what evidence you would need to build before applying.
Experience thresholds indicate leadership accountability, not total employment years. CXL is by invitation only.
How you are assessed
All LII certifications are assessed across four components with fixed weightings. No component may be waived.
Capability Evidence Portfolio
CEPWritten portfolio assessed by a Lead Assessor against level-specific rubric descriptors. The portfolio is the primary source of sustained, real-world evidence of your leadership capability — what you did, what you decided, and what measurably changed because of your leadership.
Professional Practice Review
PPR360° practitioner review documentation assessed for authenticity, depth, and evidence alignment. This component ensures that claims made in your portfolio are corroborated by colleagues, direct reports, or senior stakeholders — not solely self-reported.
Strategic Project
SPWritten analytical document reviewed by a Lead Assessor against the project rubric. The Strategic Project demonstrates your capacity to think and communicate at the level you are seeking to certify — with rigour, evidence, and strategic clarity appropriate to your level.
Panel Assessment
PAStructured professional dialogue conducted via video conference or in-person at an authorised LII venue. Scored independently by your Lead Assessor and Co-Assessor. The Panel Assessment corroborates your portfolio evidence through live, probing professional dialogue.
Critical Principle
LII does not certify participation in activities. LII certifies demonstrated workplace impact. Evidence that describes activity without showing what changed is not sufficient for a Pass grade at any level.
Structure every piece of evidence around: What did I do · What did I decide · What changed because of it · How I know.
Grade boundaries
The same grade boundaries apply at every LII certification level. No compensation operates between components.
| Grade | Overall Score | Component Minimum | Resubmission |
|---|---|---|---|
| Distinction | 85–100% | No component below 75% | — |
| Merit | 70–84% | No component below 60% | — |
| Pass | 60–69% | No component below 50% | — |
| Refer | 45–59% | Below Pass threshold | Min. 3 months — referred components only |
Where an overall score qualifies for a higher grade but a component minimum is not met, the grade is limited to the highest grade whose component minimum is satisfied. Example: overall 82% (Merit band) but Panel Assessment = 55% → result is Pass, not Merit.
