LII Programme Recognition

Independent recognition for leadership development programmes.

LII Programme Recognition assesses whether a programme demonstrably develops how people lead, and recognises it at one of four levels.

What it is

LII Programme Recognition gives an organisation an independent, evidence-based view of one defined leadership development programme.

LII recognises the programme. It does not certify the individuals who take part.

Who it is for

Training providers and consultancies

Delivering structured leadership programmes to clients.

Corporate leadership academies

Internal programmes run by L&D and people functions.

Business schools and executive education

Post-experience leadership programmes.

Public-sector leadership units

Government and public-sector leadership academies.

Why organisations seek it

  • An independent answer to “does this programme work?”
  • A clear recognition level that buyers and participants can understand.
  • A structured, written view of where the programme can improve.

What LII assesses

  1. Programme purpose and designHow the programme is designed to build leadership capability.
  2. Coverage of leadership capabilityHow it develops all five leadership domains LII defines.
  3. Learning approach and facilitationHow it is taught and facilitated.
  4. Participant outcomes — matters mostEvidence that participants lead differently afterwards.
  5. Quality and governanceHow the programme's quality is governed and improved.

All five areas are required. Strength in four cannot make up for a gap in the fifth.

Recognition levels and how long they last

Programme Recognition levels
LevelWhat it indicatesRecognition lasts
Standard RecognitionThe programme meets every requirement across all five areas of assessment.3 years
Commended RecognitionConsistent strength in every area, with well-established quality governance and continuous improvement.3 years
Advanced RecognitionEvidenced change in participants' leadership practice, corroborated by sources independent of the provider.4 years
Excellence RecognitionEverything required for Advanced, plus evidence of wider impact on the organisations participants lead.5 years

The level is set by the evidence. It is not chosen or bought.

How assessment works

  1. Enquire or applyTell LII about your programme.
  2. Eligibility and scopeLII confirms the programme is eligible and agrees what will be assessed.
  3. Independent assessmentIndependent assessors review your evidence portfolio.
  4. Decision and reportA panel confirms the level, and you receive a full written report.

How recognition is shown

The recognition seal belongs to the programme. It shows the programme’s LII Programme Recognition level.

Credentials for participants are separate

A provider whose programme is recognised may give participants who complete it a completion badge and, optionally, a Certificate of Completion. The provider issues these credentials. They record completion of the programme only. Completion does not confer LII individual certification, including CYL, confirm assessed leadership competence or entitle the holder to post-nominal letters.

Illustrative specimen — not an issued credentialCompletion badge. Names the provider and the programme completed.

A side panel explains that the programme is recognised at Commended level and that recognition describes the programme, not the participant.
Illustrative specimen — not an issued credentialCertificate of Completion (optional). Issued by the provider. It states that LII recognition applies to the programme, not to the participant.

These are illustrative examples with fictitious names. General applications are not currently open, and no seal or completion credential has been issued.

What recognition is not

LII Programme Recognition is private recognition by the Leadership Impact Institute of a leadership development programme against LII’s published criteria. It is not government approval, regulatory accreditation, an academic qualification or individual certification of programme participants.

Recognition does not certify participants or award them CPD credit.
